A Signal-Space Distance Measure for Nondispersive Optical Fiber

The nondispersive per-sample channel model for the optical fiber is considered. Under certain smoothness assumptions, problem of finding minimum amount noise energy that can render two different input points indistinguishable formulated. This then taken as a measure distance between in alphabet. Using machinery optimal control theory, necessary conditions describe minimum-energy trajectories are stated system nonlinear differential equations. It shown how to find by solving this designing signal constellations with largest subject peak power constraint formulated clique-finding problem. As an example, 16-point constellation designed and compared conventional quadrature amplitude modulation. A computationally efficient approximation proposed provided. use design large distances.
